If you were at all skeptical about recent evidence that the obesity epidemic was an important factor in the spread of cancer among women, the proof can be found in the numbers, thanks to a recent report from the American Institute for Cancer Research (AICR).

Some 100,000 new cancer cases were linked to obesity. At the top of the list: Breast cancer, with an estimated 33,000 annual cases. The percentage of specific cancers connected with obesity per year is an even bigger eye-opener. By the numbers:

• Endometrial cancer: 49 percent or 20,700 cases.

• Esophageal cancer: 35 percent or 5,800 cases.

• Pancreatic cancer: 28 percent or 11,900 cases.

• Kidney cancer: 24 percent or 13,900 cases.

• Gallbladder cancer: 21 percent or 2,000 cases.

• Breast cancer: 17 percent or 33,000 cases.

• Colorectal cancer: 9 percent or 13,200 cases.
